Cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana)

The cape gooseberry is a perennial in hot countries but is cultivated as an annual here. It is from the solanaceae family like the tomato. It is also called : love in a cage, ground-cherry or Inca berry

ROTATION

It is grown in the fruiting vegetable bed like its relative the tomato.

CULTIVATION

Sow under cover in April during a waxing crescent moon.
Transplant 1 month later to a cold frame for planting in place at the end of May.

NEIGHBOURING PLANTS

Plant it between the tomatoes but at a distance from them of 40cm ! 

DISEASES AND PARASITES

No diseases to my knowledge but be careful of slugs !

ADVICE

Harvest before the frost when the fruits become an orange colour.
Eat them cooked or raw !
