Cauliflower (Brassica deracea botrytis)

ROTATION

It is grown in the leaf vegetable bed.

CULTIVATION

For summer cauliflowers the seeds are sown in a cold frame in February and March during a waning crescent moon.
For autumn cauliflowers sow the seeds in April and May in a nursery bed during a waning crescent moon.

NEIGHBOURING PLANTS

It likes being planted near potatoes, onions, corn salad and spinach.

DISEASES AND PARASITES

Cryptogamie is a viral spore malady (use wood ash around the base of the plants).
Rot can sometimes attack the base of the plant.
The most important pest is the cabbage white butterfly but also aphids, moths, cabbage fly and grubs.

ADVICE

The cauliflower also likes being near aromatic plants like sage and rosemary which help deter certain pests.
Be careful to make sure that it is well watered in summer.
