Cauliflower (Brassica deracea botrytis)
The cauliflower is an annual vegetable from the cruciferae family
ROTATIONIt is grown in the leaf vegetable bed.
CULTIVATIONFor summer cauliflowers the seeds are sown in a cold frame in February and March during a waning crescent moon.
For autumn cauliflowers sow the seeds in April and May in a nursery bed during a waning crescent moon.
NEIGHBOURING PLANTSIt likes being planted near potatoes, onions, corn salad and spinach.
DISEASES AND PARASITESCryptogamie is a viral spore malady (use wood ash around the base of the plants).
Rot can sometimes attack the base of the plant.
The most important pest is the cabbage white butterfly but also aphids, moths, cabbage fly and grubs.
ADVICEThe cauliflower also likes being near aromatic plants like sage and rosemary which help deter certain pests.
Be careful to make sure that it is well watered in summer.
