Classification of dahlias
Here is the NEW CLASSIFICATION OF DAHLIAS up-dated and adopted by the Office of The French Society of Dahlias assembled at Enghien-les-Bains on the 19th February 2000.
1) TYPES
- I) DAHLIAS with SINGLE FLOWERS : Central disc surrounded by regularly spaced petals (preferably 8).
SINGLE ORDINARY : Variable height, diameter superior to 5cm. Example : Feuerrad (Pfitzer)
SINGLE MIGNONS : Dwarf, diameter inferior to 5 cm. Example : Topmix (Ballego)
- II) COLLERETTE DAHLIAS : Collerette dahlias have blooms with a single outer ring of generally flat ray florets, which may overlap, with a ring of small florets (The Collar) the centre forming a disc. Example : Libretto (Topsvoort) Stefanie Hertel (Voit)
- III) ANEMONE DAHLIAS : The central disc florets are elongated with tubes that form a dense group and show no disc. There are one or more rings of generally flattened ray florets. Example : Guinea (E. Turc) Roulette
- IV) PEONY DAHLIAS : Open centered flowers with two or more rows of petals surrounding a disc. Petals may be irregularly formed. Often semi-dwarf. Example : Bishop of Llandaff (Treseder)
- V) ORCHID DAHLIAS : Open centred flowers with one of ray florets surrounding a disc. The florets involute for two-thirds or more of their length. Usually partially overlapping. Example : Giraffe (Hoek) Alloway Candy (Stitt)
- VI) BOUQUET DAHLIAS : Cluster of flowers inferior to 15 cm diameter, can have less petals than cactus and decorative types. Shape and thickness variable, but often not dense. The plants are characterised by their numerous branching which gives lots of clusters of blooms. Ex : Tour du Monde (E. Turc) Président Darrault (L. Laurent) Willemse Glory
- VII) CAMELIA DAHLIAS : Clusters in general average, small or miniature. Curved petals round at the ends, never wavy or turning inwards towards the stem. Example : Londres (Vilmorin) Le Castel (L. Laurent)
- VIII) WATERLILY DAHLIAS : Same characteristics as above but the petals are longer, slightly concave and curved. Example : Lagadec (Weinreich)
- IX) SPHERICAL DAHLIAS :Petals particularly numerous, (often more than the decorative type) short, large and rounded ends.Honeycombed appearance to the clusters.
DOUBLE DAHLIAS ANCIENS : Can have an open centre. Example : Madame Frissart Kaiser Wilhelm (Deeren 1881)
BALL DAHLIAS : Full cluster, diameter superior to 5 cm. Example : L’Ancresse (Flint) Aurora’s Kiss (W. Holland)
POMPON DAHLIAS (LILLIPUTS) : Balls inferior to 5 cm diameter. Example : Andrew Lockwood (Lockwood)
- X) DECORATIVE DAHLIAS : Full clusters, petals more or less large flat and slightly concave, convex or wavy, often curved towards the stem.
DECORATIVE STRICTS : Flat petals, slightly concave or convex, often large with pointed or rounded ends. Example : Bacchanal (E. Turc) Jersey Beauty (Waite).
DECORATIFS HYBRIDES : Petals convex at their extremity, or wavy, curled or ribboned. Example : Albion (E. Turc) April Dawn (Connell)
DECORATIFS LACINIES ( FLEURS D’ŒILLET» included) : Forked regular petals giving a clean fringed appearance, forming two or three distinct points. Example : Aachener Karneval « Carnaval d’Aix » (Wirth) Pinelands Princess (Higgo) Muscadet (E. Turc)

CACTUS RAYONNANTS (DROITS) : Straight petals, regular clusters. Example : Anne de Bretagne (E. Turc) Kiwi Gloria (Durrant)
CACTUS INCURVES : Petals incurving towards the centre, regular cluster. Example Obtenteur Chapron (Chevalier) Andrew David (Connell) Cendrillon (Chevalier)
CACTUS RÉCURVÉS (sometimes called CHRYSANTHEMUM ) : Petals curved laterally in a disordered fashion. Clusters have a spiral aspect. Example : Alfred Grille (Severin) Jane Romance
CACTUS DENTELLES (LACE) : Example : Stellyvonne (Higgo) Marilyn (E. Turc)
- XII) DAHLIAS SEMI-CACTUS (HYBRIDES)
SEMI-CACTUS ORDINARY : Shapes between cactus and decoratives. Petals imperfectly convex on all their length or on just a part. Example : été Indien (E. Turc) Veronese (Delbard) Klondike (Redd)
SEMI-CACTUS LACINIÉS : Same thing, fringed petals. Example : Texas (E. Turc) Kenora Macop-B (Leroux) Black Touch (E. Turc)
