Hot July brings rare showers, apricots and gillyflowers.

Things to do in the garden

In the vegetable garden keep an eye on plants, seeds and transplantings. Water copiously.
Harvest onions, garlic and early potatoes.
Take cuttings from flowering shrubs and roses.
Continue preventative treatments with nettle solution and Bordeaux mixture.
Remove side shoots from tomatoes.
First sowing of biennial flowers and last sowing of perennials in half-shade.

Tip of the month :

Blue hydrangeas : You can revive the colours of your blue hydrangeas by burying 4 or 5 rusty nails near their roots. The flowers will then have a deeper blue tint.
