Leek (Allium porrum)
The leek is a perennial vegetable cultivated as a biennial It is from the liliaceae family like the onion
ROTATIONIt is grown in the root vegetable bed.
CULTIVATIONSeeds are sown in April and May during a waning crescent moon for transplaning in July and August.
NEIGHBOURING PLANTSIt likes being grown near carrots. It's odour deters the carrot fly, and the odour of the carrot deters the leek grub ! It also likes celery, strawberries, onions and tomatoes. It doesn't like being grown near cabbage, lettuce, beetroot, beans and peas.
DISEASES AND PARASITESLeek grub is the parasite. The maladies are the same as for the onion.
ADVICETo obtain good leeks it is necessary to trim the roots and tops and replant several times. One month before harvesting “ earth up” the plants to make them whiter. |
