Leek (Allium porrum)

The leek is a perennial vegetable cultivated as a biennial
It is from the liliaceae family like the onion

ROTATION

It is grown in the root vegetable bed.

CULTIVATION

Seeds are sown in April and May during a waning crescent moon for transplaning in July and August.

NEIGHBOURING PLANTS

It likes being grown near carrots.
It's odour deters the carrot fly, and the odour of the carrot deters the leek grub !
It also likes celery, strawberries, onions and tomatoes.
It doesn't like being grown near cabbage, lettuce, beetroot, beans and peas.

DISEASES AND PARASITES

Leek grub is the parasite. The maladies are the same as for the onion.

ADVICE

To obtain good leeks it is necessary to trim the roots and tops and replant several times.
One month before harvesting “ earth up” the plants to make them whiter.
